It's an ordinary morning for you, and as you go through your news feed (or however you keep up-to-date with current happenings), you spot a small article about yet another celebrity death. At this point, they barely even faze you. This time it was for Daniel Levine--better known by his stage name, Damien Silvermead. He was an incredibly talented magician, known as the Houdini of his day. But while Houdini was an escape artist, and the popular magicians now were illusionists, Daniel's specialty had been tricks involving deception--from impersonations to ventriloquism, he could do it all. While the height of Daniel's popularity was quite a while ago (especially since he retired), his fame has not declined, and he is still a household name across the globe.

You soon receive, however, a most unusual email. It is a request from a woman claiming to be Daniel's sister. The email notifies you of Daniel's death (it seems to fit with the article), and requests that you come to his mansion to deal with an issue pertaining to his death--immediately. It's a strange request, and at the last minute... but you decide to accept. She arranges travel for you, and soon enough you're on a plane to the Pacific Northwest.

At the airport you meet a chauffeur who escorts you to a sleek black car, and he begins to drive... and drive... and drive. You leave the city, go past the suburbs, and just when you begin to suspect you've become the victim of some sort of scam or kidnapping scheme, the trees part to reveal a large, two-story mansion. On each side of the mansion, you can see the sea stretching out into the distance; from the perspective, you can tell that you appear to be on some sort of cliff.

You step out of the car, and the smell of saltwater fills your nostrils. On a nicer day the view is probably breathtaking, but today the overcast sky and gray waters simply give the house a gloomy, foreboding feeling. It's too bright outside to see in through the windows, but patches of ivy cover the walls in some areas. As soon as you take your suitcase out of the car, the chauffeur zooms off, leaving you with only one place to go. As you approach the mansion, a factoid from the scant research you performed before departing pops into your head. Daniel Levine apparently christened his house with the same title as his primary stage show...

The Den of Deception.

Unsure of what exactly to expect, you take a deep breath and use the knocker on the front door. After several moments the door opens to reveal a tall, thin man in a suit with sharp features, snow white hair and a neat, trimmed mustache. His icy blue eyes look down on you--both literally and, you can't help but feel, figuratively. He is clearly the butler, and you can tell he is analyzing, dissecting, and judging you with his gaze.

"You must be one of the detectives," he says in a low voice. "Please, come in. Let me take your suitcase." He gestures you inside the house. You don't have time to take in the foyer before he leads you to a door and nearly thrusts you in. "Please wait in here, and I will notify Rachel you have arrived." You recognize that name as the woman who contacted you. The butler gives a short bow, and closes the door.

The room you find yourself in has beige wallpaper with a white floral pattern. In the center of the room is a glass table with a potted fern on top, around which four armchairs are arranged. Two people--from the look on their faces, they're as confused as you are--are already sitting in the chairs. The chairs have a wooden frame and white fabric with a colorful floral print. A rug with a matching design is laid out underneath the chairs. Slightly larger, beige armchairs are also in one or two of the corners. In another corner is a tall wooden cabinet with glass doors. A mirror in a gold frame hangs on the northern wall. Some windows overlook the lawn, and the only door is the one you just came in through. There is an obsidian statue of dragon of a pedestal in the southeast corner of the room.

You are currently in the parlor with two strangers.

A bored-looking man checks his watch with half-opened brown eyes. He preferred to stand, shifting his weight from one feet to the other.
It looked more like he was waiting for a train to arrive at his stop.
He loosened the gray-ish scarf that had been hiding the lower part of his face a little bit, revealing that he was younger than one might have guessed from his dark-gray tweed suit.
There was some light stubble on his chin, but it didn't really mask that the man was in his early twenties at best, possibly younger.
His hair was red and somewhat disheveled, with one particular strand standing up into the air way too noticably.

"...Noted. They didn't think my services alone would be sufficient. It's fair." he seemed to say more to himself than the other ones.

He walks over to the cabinet and looks through the glass to see if anything is inside.

The cabinet has a couple of shelves in it, and sitting on the shelf on each side is a small crystal figurine of an animal.

I already regret allowing Tomo to trick me into this.

A relatively plain looking man was standing in the mansion's interior. "Bland" was definitely an appropriate descriptor of his appearance- it was all more or less typical for a Japanese teenager. He looked down at his blue sweatshirt and beige jeans and paused for a moment- was this really "detective" attire?

Then again he'd never really met a private detective before- well, that wasn't true. But even if you could call them a "private detective" his... acquitance probably wasn't a typical person even for such a niche field. The butler had probably be... underwhelmed to be sure.

It's all nonsense, anyway.

Boku let out a sigh, something he noted he'd been doing a lot today. It looked like somehow, somebody had caught onto what had happened on Wet Crow's Island and decided that that was enough "experience" to qualify him to look into this matter. And Kunagisa had decided that since it would "give you something to do, Il-chan!" she'd sent over his consent before he'd even read the email. Being friends with a super-hacker could be rather... irritating. But it's Tomo, so he supposed it didn't matter. Not like this was particularly unusual on her part.

Honestly he was slightly tempted to just rest in the chair and let the other detectives take care of everything; it's not like anything he could do'd make a difference in the end. But hey, maybe he should at least look the part.

Since his... colleague, Boku supposed?... was already examining the cabinet, he decided to go take a closer look at the other object that really caught his attention in the room- the fancy mirror.

Might as well at least look the part, I guess.

Boku looks into the mirror. A bored-looking Japanese teenager looks back. The mirror is circular and decently sized, and the golden frame has zigzag petals poking out around the circumference, immediately giving you an image of the sun.

More or less bewildered, I'm a little off-put at how quickly this whole situation unfolded. This morning I was sipping my cup of blackness, trying to read the paper that somehow could afford to still print, let alone employ people, and checking my e-mail to see if the girls had found something interesting for a change. They didn't. But I did find something I wasn't expecting. A job - from someone famous nevertheless. Since my schedule was blank I decided it was worth the merit of playing along. Worse to worse, I wasted a couple days of free time. After packing my suitcase and a brief internet search, I'm in the airport, then on a plane, then well...

Now I'm in a room. Looking over the other two who seem to be eyeing something in the cabinet. Whatever. I drew my gaze over them; they looked like young men. Good. Better then being surrounded by old farts.

"Help huh? Humph, suppose it's smart." My voice rings clear.

I take a walk over, sitting in one of those nicer chairs in the corner, stretching out a little. A chill runs up my spine. I really should have fought for my suitcase. White, long sleeved button blouse and black, fitting shorts were modest on a young frame, but not too warm. It would probably get cold before too much longer. I shrug my shoulders, fingers twirling around my silver bracelet, taking a moment to think. Sighing, I pull a pen from my pocket and a notepad from the pocket on my chest. I tapped the paper with the pen twice, then started penning my thoughts thus far. A habit. One that hadn't failed my yet. And so I write.

The young man tightened the scarf around his neck again, glancing over towards the other 'detectives', if he should assume them to be that.

Never bad to understand the tastes of your host.
...

He ends up not being able to help his curiosity. The man opens the cabinet to take a closer look at the crystal animals.

Each figure is a couple of inches high and made of crystal clear glass. The shapes aren't made with smooth curves, but instead each figure is composed of dozens of small geometric faces that join each other at the edges. Peering into the cabinet, you also notice a light set into the ceiling inside the cabinet with a small switch, and that the cabinet shelves are made of glass.

A thought crossed his mind... "That man would have expected this to reveal a hidden passage..."

Not looking particularly satisfied with his findings, the young man proceeds to use the switch that presumably turns on the light inside the cabinet.

The switch that presumably turns on the light inside the cabinet turns on the light inside the cabinet. The crystal figures sparkle and dazzle in the light.

Boku nods to himself. Well, that was around as fruitless as he'd expected. But hey, it probably looked like he'd accomplished something.

The teenager then made his way back to a chair and sat down; he saw that one of the "detectives" (were the other two detectives? I mean, he'd assumed but...) was writing something down- probably notes, though he wasn't sure exactly what could be noteworthy thus far. The other detective seemed fascinated by the cabinet, though it looked pretty average.

"Anyway, since I assume we'll be working together, I suppose we should get introductions out of the way?" Boku offered.

The young man turned around towards 'the other people'.

"Hm, yes. They keep us waiting, don't they? First the driving, now this room."

He moved towards one of the chairs and considered sitting down, but decided against it after all. This wasn't the time to get comfortable.
Looking at these other detectives, he noted they looked also relatively young.
Does that make them more trustworthy?

"...Introductions make sense. I'm sure you figured, but I'm what you would call a detective. My name is Blaze...", he seemed to hesitate for just a second. "...Blaze Roone."

"Mhmm"

Still penning in my notepad, having dotted all the events I wished - a grand total of not much - I smooth my raven hair behind my beck, pen still in hand. Might as well get it over with.

"Rebecca. Charmed." I give a firm nod, crossing my legs, and return to my notepad. "Forgive me, I'm not much for introductions." I pause, tapping my cheek with the index finger of my writing hand, eyes never looking away from my paper. "May I presume we've been brought together under a similar offer?"

Boku pauses as he realizes he never actually introduced himself. Oh well, did it really matter?

"For the record, you two can call me whatever you want. Nobody ever remembers my name anyway." He said with a shrug.

"Anyhow, I presume we're all here for the same reason. You two got an email from Daniel's sister, right?"

The door to the parlor opens with a small creak, and a middle-aged woman enters the room. She's wearing a black dress, and her dirty blonde hair is done up in a bun. She's wearing small silver earrings, and the make-up around her eyes is a little smudged. She’s trying to put on a kind smile, but it’s obvious something heavy is weighing on her mind.

"I see you've all arrived. Hello, Mr. Roone, Ms. Pope, and... you," she says, giving a small nod to each of the three detectives in turn. "Thank you so much for coming here on such short notice. I really appreciate it."
