Spriting competition

Trust will be restored
Justice will be revived
A new era will begin
As part of the AAO - The Bright Age of the Law events, I'm happy to announce this spriting competition.

Tasks
The Bright Age of the Law is the start of a new era for Ace Attorney Online - a new era which will see AAO open up to more community-created contents.
Your task will be to create sprites for an original character that will be included in the AAO default database, for all authors to use.

The theme of that competition is The Bright Age of the Law - Inspire trust in justice.
Your original character must be a man of law (in the large sense : prosecutor, attorney, judge, but also bailiff, policeman, etc.) which inspires trust.

Rewards

1st prize :
  • Custom forum title : "AAO - trustworthy spriter"
  • Character will be included in the default AAO database
  • Author will be credited in the AAO credits page
Runner-ups :
  • Character will be included in the default AAO database
  • Author will be credited in the AAO credits page
Conditions
  • The entry must have been created between April 1st, 2014 and August 8th, 2014.
  • The author must have posted his entry on this topic before August 8th, 2014. Please gather all the sprites of your entry in a single post, and start your post with

    Code: Select all

    Competition entry
  • The entry's graphic style should be harmonised with official sprites, so that it can be used alongside them.
  • The entry must be comprised of animated gifs with standard dimensions 256*192px.
  • The entry must be comprised of at least 4 poses, each with at least a talking and a still animation (so 8 animated sprites minimum).
You can add startup animations if you wish.

This is pretty interesting. I didn't think I'd have the time... but three months? Huh.

Questions: These are sprites specifically for the V6 editor, correct? And how many different entries are allowed?

Well, the sprites work the same in V5 or V6 provided that they are standard size (256*192px) anyway.
But the point is to add them to the AAO library around the time of the V6 official launch :-)

And I didn't put any limit to the number of entries, you can enter several characters if you want. But of course, the objective is to have near-official quality, so you might be better off taking the time to polish one character than entering many of them ;-)

It didn't occur to me that this might be an April Fools joke since it says it came out on the 2nd for me - but then, timezones.

Actually, I don't really get what is an April Fools joke and what isn't. After all, judging by the quality of the trailer, I'd think some progress was made, but...

Also, it shows up to me as April 2nd and I'm in the same timezone as Unas... So I assume the competition isn't fake? But still, I don't even really know what the competition is about.

The trailer was the April Fools joke, there will be no case/game/whatever named The Bright Age of the Law.
However, all the events that will be organised under the "The Bright Age of the Law" banner are absolutely real. The V6 pre-release, the case competition, the spriting competition, and the tutorial competition are real.

Eh, I don't think I'll enter after all. I can't use my idea and can't think of anything else. Good luck to everyone.

The problem for me is that I have absolutely no ideas for the topic "inspiring trust". Oh well, if I happen to get inspiration (and have the time), I might join.
First I still need to do that Lind's background request though... Nope, I haven't forgotten, just that busy uni is busy.

Anyway, how are the entries going to be judged? I don't find anything about it in the OP.

That's a good question; I haven't entirely decided on that because it'll depend on the number of entries in each competition.

But because the aim is to provide content that will be featured on the site, the judgment will at least include a first quality assessment, by me and/or a team of evaluators that I'll trust.
Then, if there are enough high quality entries, I'll submit them to public vote to pick the winner among the runner ups :-)

Like I can complain when I still haven't done Koopakirby's request.
