[T][CE][DGS♫][SoJ♫] Curiosity of a Turnabout ●

Post by Blackrune »

Made for the Odd Premises Competition hosted by Reecer6
Story:
The year is 2416. Humanity as we know it has been mostly forgotten, as strange creatures roam the world and attack anyone they encounter.
The people of the town "Safe Haven" are able to keep these creatures at bay with the help of SPELLs - unique supernatural abilities.
A lot of technology has been lost, although scholars have managed to collect and preserve most major breakthroughs in medicine. Some technology has also been made redundant due to SPELLs.

It is in this future that scientist Linus Skye is called to assist the police in a most curious case - a murder outside the safe walls of the town.
The culprit is obvious - or at least it seems that way. Regardless, Linus soon becomes convinced that there has to be more to this case than meets the eye. The fate of the entire town might rest on his shoulders...

Notes:
-Has gameplay. Though while it is fairly AA-like, it may not be exactly the usual due to the premise.
-This is pretty long. Don't expect to finish this in one session. (unless you have 5+ hours of time I guess)

Karan Kat's House:
-Just exhaust all talk options. Once he closes the door on you, you're done.

Victim's House:
(Note that this is the shortest possible route, but not the one you'd likely take ingame. You can also just try the lock five times if you're lost and didn't save)
To win the minigame, simply:
-move to second pin
-pull pin down
-pull pin down
-move to third pin
-pull pin down
-pull pin down
-move to fourth pin
-push pin up
-move to fifth pin
-push pin up

-examine the table in the upper right corner, this reveals a new location: Talia Porter's house
-move to library
-examine the book on the ground

Talia Porter's House:
-Exhaust all talk options
-examine the wine bottles on the right side of the room, this reveals a new location: Maxwell's Marvels

So hey, if you haven't played this yet? Should probably do that. #truefacts Review coming eventually probably.
Spoiler : Spoilers don't read unless you've played all parts :
Honestly though, the second half of part 2 was driving me crazy because I kept waiting for somebody to point out that the entire elaborate plan I was coming up with was completely dependent on Porter creating 2 witnesses in that exact location. And I couldn't figure out a way to make that work and I was so worried that I was going to get stuck because I had to come up with an impossible scenario. But hey it all worked out in the end! :D

Man that was cool! I honestly think this case uses magic better than the Layton crossover did. One question about the ending:
SPOILERS:
Spoiler : :
In the ending where you side with the outcast, it's mentioned that there have been strange disappearances in the town. Is this detail just a throwaway thing, or is that answered somewhere else that I missed?

The answer to that isn't in this game. The reason I hinted at some unresolved plot points there was mainly because I felt like being meta with "you picked the uncertain future". If there ever ends up being a sequel I might explain it though.

I'm working on a review! A few quick questions and thoughts - not sure if plot holes or just careless reading.
Spoiler : THERE BE SPOILERS HERE :
      * If I follow correctly, the real Talia Porter was wounded at a young age, and Linus was made to fuse her brain with the 'empty' Outcast Jr. body. Much later, she came to Linus and said something was "wrong" with her body. Linus saw that his power had been used on her, and set up a brain tank to hold her brain once the SPELL failed and the fusion was undone. By the time of the trial, a full robot body was ready, and she inhabited it.

What does this mean? Why didn't she notice the change in her body and, in particular, her face when she was first transferred? Why didn't people who knew her think she had a wildly different face?

      * For that matter, why doesn't Linus immediately recognize Outcast Jr. as fake because of her lack of blue hair?

      * Real Talia has such a drastically different language pattern from Outcast Jr. that it seems bizarre that Fake Talia wouldn't have at least tried to imitate it - or that Linus wouldn't have mentioned it. I think it's being played as a joke, but it's not quite working as one.

      * How exactly was Outcast Jr. initially planning to square Maxwell's testimony happening (as far as he knew) on the east side of the city? Did she intend to confess to misleading him in court from the beginning in order to push her 'vampire killer' story? If so, wouldn't this immediately draw enough attention to her to make questions like, "Are you an accomplice" very likely to come up in interrogation?

      * In Real Talia's notes, she repeatedly and consistently refers to the Outcast as "he." No other narration or dialogue in the game refers to a male outcast. Is this referring to Outcast Jr's mom? If so, why the pronoun switch? Language trouble?

      * In the final showdown, why on earth would Linus wait to name EVERYONE when the killer could use his power at any time? Surely presenting 3 or 4 wrong ideas would be enough to get the point across.
"A slow sort of country!" said the Queen. "Now, here, you see, it takes all the running you can do, to keep in the same place. If you want to get somewhere else, you must run at least twice as fast as that!"

One reason Talia was picked was because she already looked somewhat similar to the outcast's child back then. We're talking pretty young here, so even if she noticed something was off, she'd just have forgotten that ever happened after some years. As for her family, well, even if something seemed a little weird about her appearance, it was still obviously the same person with the same mannerisms and the same memories. She was still growing so they could just have chalked it up to that.

      * For that matter, why doesn't Linus immediately recognize Outcast Jr. as fake because of her lack of blue hair?

Only the robot had blue hair actually. He just assumed she dyed it back to her natural color... though I guess he could have dropped a comment about that.

      * Real Talia has such a drastically different language pattern from Outcast Jr. that it seems bizarre that Fake Talia wouldn't have at least tried to imitate it - or that Linus wouldn't have mentioned it. I think it's being played as a joke, but it's not quite working as one.

He does bring up that she was talking differently when they meet in the investigation.
Linus: Though... you're acting a little strange today, aren't you?
Linus: Like... what happened to the usual... hm... melodramatic eloquence?
Linus: Either you're trying to leave a good impression on Rei, or something happened.
"Talia": I have no idea what you're talking about.
Linus: You do. You're just being the usual problem in that regard.

She gets away with it because regular Talia's personality left enough of an impression on Linus for him to assume she's just playing games again.
...Though I acknowledge he should have probably found it weird more than once, or questioned why she kept doing it.
As for why fake Talia doesn't even try - she simply didn't even know that was a thing.
Whenever Talia met with the outcast's child, she 'downgraded' her speech-style so that who she assumed to be more primitive would be able to understand.
"Talia" then assumed this was how she always talked, and pretty much just had to talk her way out whenever someone questioned her on it.

She didn't intend it from the beginning. She would have been fine with letting the contradiction stand.(contradictory statements with no explanation -> prosecutor looks bad -> profit) It was just an option should it get to that. It's not like she could actually predict how the trial would go. So yeah, it was pretty risky, but at least offered the benefit that she would then be confirmed as someone with a spell. If asked whether she was an accomplcie, she would have tried to dodge with her excuse about the safely obtainable Slicer blade being in the west and Maxwell being too hard to convince to go there. She was mostly banking on the fact that the prosecutor would be fixated on finding the culprit first(which, without Nils unexpectedly going with Titus, would have been quite the job for him.)

      * In Real Talia's notes, she repeatedly and consistently refers to the Outcast as "he." No other narration or dialogue in the game refers to a male outcast. Is this referring to Outcast Jr's mom? If so, why the pronoun switch? Language trouble?

I guess that's never explained, but it's pretty much just that Talia actually thought fake Talia was a man because 1.) fake Talia lived in a pretty rough environment outside, and her choice of clothing and unkempt appearance led Talia to make the wrong guess (as we know from the ??? corpse, her figure doesn't give it away) and 2.) she obviously made an effort herself to not be recognized by the person she was trying to impersonate later, so when Talia assumed she was a guy she just went with it.

      * In the final showdown, why on earth would Linus wait to name EVERYONE when the killer could use his power at any time? Surely presenting 3 or 4 wrong ideas would be enough to get the point across.

To be fair, if you present Talia right away he does just cut to the chase. One wrong guess and you have to go through everyone... the idea was mostly to have it be a dramatic checkmate moment where the player wonders how it's going to be resolved. It does admittedly go on for a little too long.

Spoiler : One last question prior to review :
      * How did Linus manage to make a brain jar and a robot in a world where bicycles and cell phones are both marvelous ancient inventions? My first guess was that he asked Rei to get blueprints from the future, but we learn that she never told him she could view future references. He could have gotten some tech blueprints from the past, assuming past humanity had reached the brain-jar stage, but even then blueprints alone could do nothing without the factories, etc needed to make the parts. Another possibility is that there was some trove of ancient tech parts outside of Safe Haven that were brought to Linus, but I didn't see any mention of that...

      Spoiler : :
Well, Dief had already done some work. The two of them basically collected all old books they managed to find across town, and gained theoretical knowledge from that. Chances are Dief also prodded his daughter for some extra information, but Linus didn't know about that.
The reason bikes and cell phones and stuff were forgotten was because they were redundant back then (in the beginning it was just a small community, and later on there was usually someone around that could just do it with a spell) and people had other concerns like survival, which is why their knowledge of medicine remained in good condition. (rules like not being allowed to bring in material from outside was also putting a stop on some things, of course) And since that's pretty advanced (they basically know how to prevent/significantly slow the aging process and prevent most illnesses), the 'preservation fluid' for the brain jar was basically the easy part since people still had some knowledge there.
This also meant there was some remaining theoretical knowledge about artificial body parts, it's just the fully functional robot that was a problem. And to be fair, they were still stuck on that when Dief died and Talia teleported into the jar. Dief and Linus gained as much knowledge as they could on the subject, but were still stuck on how to actually build and connect it. But now that Linus was using his spell again, he kind of cheated by just combining things, analyzing how they're put together, and manually replicating it later. It's easy to argue this explanation is lacking because Linus shouldn't exactly have the manufacturing capabilities required to do it manually but... yeah, I'm afraid that's as far as my explanation on that went.
