It's an ordinary morning for you, and as you go through your news feed (or however you keep up-to-date with current happenings), you spot a small article about yet another celebrity death. At this point, they barely even faze you. This time it was for Daniel Levine--better known by his stage name, Damien Silvermead. He was an incredibly talented magician, known as the Houdini of his day. But while Houdini was an escape artist, and the popular magicians now were illusionists, Daniel's specialty had been tricks involving deception--from impersonations to ventriloquism, he could do it all. While the height of Daniel's popularity was quite a while ago (especially since he retired), his fame has not declined, and he is still a household name across the globe.

You soon receive, however, a most unusual email. It is a request from a woman claiming to be Daniel's sister. The email notifies you of Daniel's death (it seems to fit with the article), and requests that you come to his mansion to deal with an issue pertaining to his death--immediately. It's a strange request, and at the last minute... but you decide to accept. She arranges travel for you, and soon enough you're on a plane to the Pacific Northwest.

At the airport you meet a chauffeur who escorts you to a sleek black car, and he begins to drive... and drive... and drive. You leave the city, go past the suburbs, and just when you begin to suspect you've become the victim of some sort of scam or kidnapping scheme, the trees part to reveal a large, two-story mansion. On each side of the mansion, you can see the sea stretching out into the distance; from the perspective, you can tell that you appear to be on some sort of cliff.

You step out of the car, and the smell of saltwater fills your nostrils. On a nicer day the view is probably breathtaking, but today the overcast sky and gray waters simply give the house a gloomy, foreboding feeling. It's too bright outside to see in through the windows, but patches of ivy cover the walls in some areas. As soon as you take your suitcase out of the car, the chauffeur zooms off, leaving you with only one place to go. As you approach the mansion, a factoid from the scant research you performed before departing pops into your head. Daniel Levine apparently christened his house with the same title as his primary stage show...

The Den of Deception.

Unsure of what exactly to expect, you take a deep breath and use the knocker on the front door. After several moments the door opens to reveal a tall, thin man in a suit with sharp features, snow white hair and a neat, trimmed mustache. His icy blue eyes look down on you--both literally and, you can't help but feel, figuratively. He is clearly the butler, and you can tell he is analyzing, dissecting, and judging you with his gaze.

"You must be one of the detectives," he says in a low voice. "Please, come in. Let me take your suitcase." He gestures you inside the house. You don't have time to take in the foyer before he leads you to a door and nearly thrusts you in. "Please wait in here, and I will notify Rachel you have arrived." You recognize that name as the woman who contacted you. The butler gives a short bow, and closes the door.

The room you find yourself in has beige wallpaper with a white floral pattern. In the center of the room is a glass table with a potted fern on top, around which four armchairs are arranged. Two people--from the look on their faces, they're as confused as you are--are already sitting in the chairs. The chairs have a wooden frame and white fabric with a colorful floral print. A rug with a matching design is laid out underneath the chairs. Slightly larger, beige armchairs are also in one or two of the corners. In another corner is a tall wooden cabinet with glass doors. A mirror in a gold frame hangs on the northern wall. Some windows overlook the lawn, and the only door is the one you just came in through. There is an obsidian statue of dragon of a pedestal in the southeast corner of the room.

You are currently in the parlor with two strangers.

Somewhere, a door creaked open.

"Edwam…"

I awoke from my sleep at the sound of my name. The bedroom was unknown to me. But looked strangely familiar all the same. I closed my eyes, my head a mess. How had I gotten here? I wondered. This wasn't merely a case of „falling asleep at one place and awakening in another“.

I was somewhere I knew I didn't want to be. But I knew it was a place I belonged in.

I couldn't explain it.

"Edwam…"

A voice whispered once more.

I got up. Getting my balance was difficult, but managable. I was a thin bastard but no lightweight. I could do this, I knew. I wondered if I'd been drugged. But for some reason, quickly dismissed the thought.

"Mr. Althorp's dead!"

Another voice, somewhere in the distance.

"A secret passage was used to…"

Another one.

"I'll take off his shoes--!"

Another one.

"Let's carry him to—"

This was all wrong.

"My name is Charles McNeil."

Another one.

They kept coming from… somewhere!

I ran out the door, understandably terrified. The hallway I'd found myself in was dim, but I could make what seemed to be a stairway at the end of it.

"Althorp…"

Someone whispered…

I moved, stumbling in the dark.

"Althorp…"

…But who was it? It didn't matter. Not really. I had to move.

"ALTHORP…!"

More voices, I figured.

Yes. I had to move.

"I'm afraid Mr. Roone has been killed."

Death.

"Michael, you can't just expect us to sit here and do nothing!"

Panic.

„Nathaniel, wait!“

Yes. That's how it happened. That's how it always happens. It was a conclusion I made as I walked down that stairway. But a conclusion I had had no reasonable way to reach.

That is how it will always happen.

I ran down the stairs. I had to escape it.

"McNeil! Althorp! Whatever the hell your name is! You're not getting away, or my name isn't—!"

Voices. The voices just kept going.

As I reached the end, I frantically looked around. I was in a hall of some kind. A mansion, I figured.

Yes. Yes, there is always a mansion!

"Make this end…"

"End…"

End…

End!

"Edwam…"

A voice spoke. So gently. Somewhere in the distance.

"Leave this place, Edwam. There is nothing for you here anymore. It is dead."

"No…" I said, but they were not words I wanted to speak. "Please. Not like this. I can still fix it. I can—"

"They're gone. They're all gone, Edwam. Nathaniel, Blake, Michael… They are but a memory now. The case is closed. It lies in the ruin in which it had begun. And so do you."

"What was all of it for…? What the hell did all those people die for…?"

The voice chuckled.

"Your life is not your own. You are but a pawn of another. A word in an endless ocean. A grain in the sand. A drop of blood spilled in a massacre. You? You are nothing but an instrument through which death will carry out its plans."

"I’m… I’m a detective!"

"No… No. You are not even that. You are merely a figment of someone’s imagination. What you become is what someone else wants you to become. And now, you will be crushed. Destroyed. Chewed and spat. And from your nothing – something will be born again."

"Who the hell are you, anyway?!" I screamed at it. "To say something like that?!"

Nothing.

"Well?! Who the hell are you?!" I demanded anyway.

"I…" the voice spoke. "I am Ba—"

___________________________________________________________________________________________

"…Just a nightmare." I told myself, splashing water on my face. The other passengers on the plane weren’t exactly happy with a man suddenly breaking their sleep with a scream, but they were thankfully polite enough not to say anything. "Just a nightmare." I was in the bathroom, trying to get my bearings.

"Althorp…"

It was a name I kept hearing in these nightmares. Why…? I wasn’t sure.

Being a private detective – one with connections and a stubborn head – I tried looking into it. But there was nothing.

I looked up, finding myself staring at me through the mirror.

My face was boney, the bags under my eyes heavy and my black short hair as messy as ever. "Jesus Christ, Edwam… You’re a mess."

I’d put on a suit to look a bit more professional for this client. Not every day someone pays your flight to… well, I didn’t know what I was doing. But then again, not knowing what I was doing was a specialty of mine so I figured I might as well.

I fixed my posture. I had problems with my spine, but the important thing was to always look professional.

"I’m detective Edwam McNeil. I’m a private detective."

Sounded good enough at the time.

___________________________________________________________________________________________

“I’m detective Edwam NcNeil. I’m a private detective. Um…” I coughed.. “Hi.”

Yes. Yes, there is always a mansion!

It was as if something in my mind was warning me. My body shook. I wasn’t fear, but… Well, I imagine whatever emotion that line was supposed to invoke inside me.

Your life is not your own.

I quickly sighed. "Sounded better in the bathroom, right?" I wasn’t sure why I had said that. "Oh, wait, no. Sorry. Forget that. Why did I— Oh, never mind. Who, uh... Who're you guys?"

And from your nothing – something will be born again.

I blinked. "Focus", I told myself.

And I swore then and there.

I wasn’t going to let a nightmare screw me over on a job.

The mansion in that twisted reality wanted to rot away along with Althorp and whatever the hell his name was dragging along? Then let it rot, I said. Whoever the Edwam they called through those halls clearly wasn’t me.

It was never me.

And somewhere in my mind, a door creaked itself shut.

For the time being, at least.

Spoiler : Everyone can read this, it's just OoC :
Name: Mizuki Hoshizora
Appearance: 22-year old. She's got long hot pink hair (yes, it's dyed). She... Honestly looks more like a pop-star than anything. She's got an outfit similar to this, but the skirt is red plaid all the way around, no suspenders, and black knee-high socks.

YOU GOT AN ANIME CHARACTER AYY
"Edwam, eh?"

Mizuki smiled.

"The name's Mizuki~ Nice to meet you~ I guess... You can say I'm a private investigator...?"

She turned to the other stranger in the room.

"... And... Who might you be?"

        ...

   ...

...Something startled her back to her senses. Cautious, she glanced upwards a little, searching for the voice that had awoken her from her daze. Through the gaps between the tangled mess she called her hair, she caught a ditzy-looking girl staring back at her -- Haru was quick to assess the person eyeing her from afar. From her clothes, her admirer appeared to be some kind of performer. A dancer, perhaps? Whatever the case, she definitely did not seem to belong.

...

Regardless. That was the least of her worries right now.

For one, Haru hardly looked normal herself; though her clothes might've given one the impression that she were an everyday university student, her hair would tell another tale entirely. To the casual onlooker, it would seem that mop hadn't met a pair of scissors in at least a couple decades. In truth, they wouldn't be far off. Black streaks flowed from the top of her head, billowing and cascading downwards until just barely meeting the ground below.

To the gaudy-looking woman before her, it must've seemed strange that Haru was able to make her way about the room without so much as grazing her hair between her shoes and the floor. Haru, however, knew it was nothing more than the result of years of dealing with the stuff; just like anything else, she'd learned to handle it on her own thanks to the passage of time.

...

...And for another, where the hell was she?!

Realizing she should probably have been coping with that sooner than her appearance, Haru straightened up.

She remembered... little.

A cursory examination of the room revealed to her that she was in some kind of lounge. Not long after, the furniture gave way to the knowledge that this was probably some high-quality estate -- a mansion, maybe? That was her first guess. ...She seemed to remember seeing one of those not too long ago, at least.

.......Agh! Had she really been paying this little attention?!

It seemed the best cause of action would be to confide in the others here. If not for their company, they should at least be carrying some useful information between the two brains of theirs.

...

Curiously, the stranger from before still wore her quizzical look.

...Right. She still hadn't answered the question, had she?

"A-Ahh...!" Haru struggled to feign surprise -- by the time the noise left her lips, it came across as more of an aloof sigh. Or perhaps an uncomfortable one.

That didn't matter, though -- just so long as she presented herself just as she always did. It would be best if she followed the gaudy woman's lead and blended in, right?

"H-Hi... Usami."

...No, that wasn't enough. It's at least customary to give a full name in situations like these. No need to skimp on the details.

"Usami Haru. Good to meet yooou~!" The girl raised her hand and tried to gesture in some typically cutesy way.

It didn't work. The silent period between her realizing this and and the moment she stuck her hand back in the scraggly mop on her head to cover for the awkwardness was a little too long.

The door to the parlor opens with a small creak, and a middle-aged woman enters the room. She's wearing a black dress, and her dirty blonde hair is done up in a bun. She's wearing small silver earrings, and the make-up around her eyes is a little smudged. She’s trying to put on a kind smile, but it’s obvious something heavy is weighing on her mind.

"I see you've all arrived. You must be Mr. McNeil, Ms. Hoshizora, and Ms. Usami," she says, giving a small nod to each of the three detectives in turn. "I'm Rachel Johnson. Thank you so much for coming here on such short notice. I really appreciate it."

"Ah, I see."

She flashed a warm smile. "It's nice to meet you too, Haru~ I hope we can work well together~"

Satisfied with the answer she received from the other girl, Mizuki turned to face the woman who just entered the room.

"Hello, Mrs. Johnson. It's a pleasure to meet you. I'm... Sorry for your loss. But... I presume, well, since we were invited... That there is something suspicious regarding his death...?"

"N-Not quite," Rachel said with a touch of hesitation. "It was... sudden," Rachel choked up slightly, "But Danny was sick the past few months, so it wasn't that unexpected. He had a stroke, apparently, and that's what... happened. There doesn't seem to be much doubt about it. Rather..."

Rachel's voice trailed off, and she paused for a second. Her eyes then glaze over, and she recites, almost in a trance:

"It shall begin with a bang; I wonder who will win.
I follow the Arbiter as he sums my good deeds and sin.
Finally, he decides; will I fall down to Hades below?
Or spring forth like a Phoenix in the morning glow?"

Suddenly, Rachel snapped back to normal, and looked at the detectives. "That, uh... That doesn't mean anything to any of you, does it?" She asked sheepishly.

What. Mizuki thought to herself. W-What the hell is that supposed to mean?

The... Arbiter? A bang? What on earth is all that?

And... Not to mention that vacant look in her eyes when she recites that... Ugh. There's definitely more here than meets the eye...

Mizuki gave a sheepish smile and gave an empty laugh.

"Haha... I'm... Not exactly sure what that means. But where exactly did you... Uh... Learn that from? And, well, perhaps my fellow... Investigators have better ideas?"

Something about the way Rachel had described her brother's fate had made me instinctively check my pockets. They were empty. I wondered if I'd forgotten to bring something. Something of relative importance. I found it strange that I was having memory problems. But what was even stranger was that I couldn't quite recall whether or not I should find memory problems to be strange in the first place.

What you become is what someone else wants—

I quickly shut my eyes. "Oh, well. It probably wasn't anything important." I concluded, cursing myself for being so anxious. This was a normal job, like any other. It was all going to be okay. I knew what I was doing. I knew the methods. I knew the tricks. No matter what awaited me, I would get through it. And after all of it was done... I figured I should go see a doctor about the nightmares. Yes, that was a good idea. But for the time being, it was just another thing I had to keep out of my head. In fact, I cursed myself again for letting my train of thought switch tracks so quickly back to the nightmares. "No thinking about the nightmares", I ordered myself.

I lifted my eyelids and looked over to the girl that had introduced herself as Mizuki, who was visibly confused over Rachel's, for lack of a better word, "poem". Granted, I was confused as well, but seeming like I knew what I was talking about was one of my specialties.

...Or, wait.

Wasn't it that I didn't know what I was doing?

How odd.

In any case, I figured I should offer my own take on the situation:

"Well, in the same way that St. Peter judges you at the gates of Heaven to tell you whether or not you can get in, and in the same way King Minos judges you at the gates of Hell to tell you which circle you'll end up in, this Arbiter... Well, actually, this Arbiter would be a mix of both. Just a jerk who says 'screw the process' and just tells you straight-up where you're gonna end up. Kind of a shame that it doesn't seem like you can end up in a Purgatory, b—"

I was rambling.

"Still, the first line doesn't really fit with the rest. 'It shall begin with a bang; I wonder who will win'... Makes me think of a duel. Which makes me think pistols. Which makes me think 19th century. Which makes me think top hats. Which makes me think magicians. What makes me think of your dead bro—"

I was not giving a great impression.

"Well, obviously, this is... a riddle of some sort, no?"

"A riddle..." Haru pondered under her breath, doing her best to ignore the rest of the man's ramblings. She certainly wasn't unfamiliar with these kinds of puzzles, but even so, she couldn't help but feel a little lead on. She came here under the pretenses of a murder mystery, didn't she? Or, at least, one regarding the death of a famous performer. Apparently, those pretenses had merely been falsehoods.

Perhaps...

Had this woman really been so worried that she wouldn't be able to get help that she used her brother's death as a ploy?

...

To Haru, though, there was something even stranger than that. She couldn't help feeling a little uneasy at the woman's -- Rachel's, was it? -- utterance. Both before and after the speech, she came across as perfectly normal, if a little sheepish... but during the recital, it had been another story altogether. Unmoving, glazed eyes, coupled with an uncharacteristically smooth reading... Haru didn't want to think about it, but at the same time...

"Possession...?" The words spoke themselves, giving the others some insight as to her 'theory.' Already, she regretted letting her inner thoughts slip so carelessly. Possession... that is a little farfetched, isn't it.

She reassured herself. She knew well that demons and their brand of trickery existed... only in myth and legend. That was right, wasn't it...? She knew that...!

...Stubbornly, she still refused to rule it out entirely.

  ...

She couldn't tell if it was just her own paranoia, but Haru suddenly felt stared at for even suggesting the idea. She'd always been a bit of an oddball, but spouting nonsense about ghosts and possession couldn't have left the best first impression. Fighting the temptation to hide once more behind her veil of hair, Haru spoke up again -- perhaps in an effort to redeem herself.

"That seems like a good starting point! Where Ms. Johnson learned this is vital. Probably!" There was a little too much emphasis on that last word.

"Also..." a lower tone now passed through her lips. Wanting to offer up something of use herself, she added, "for our sake, and your own, please try to give us all the information you have. That includes not lying to us about what we're really doing here, too." She tried to be offhanded about her suspicions, but she couldn't help but feel her bluff here was obvious. After all, she wasn't totally sure Rachel had been lying about her sibling's relevance, but it did feel as if they'd been mislead to some degree.

Still. Hopefully her blunt delivery would be enough to shake her opponent enough into giving her the info she wanted. Bluffing is a pretty flawless tactic, right?

"Yes, this is a riddle... left behind by Daniel," Rachel explained.

"You see, he's... somehow hidden his wealth somewhere, and this is the clue he left behind for us to find it. Daniel apparently wanted myself, our older brother, and his two sons to compete to see who could solve the riddle and find his money first, with that person receiving all of it. Thankfully, none of us have any interest in that sort of thing, so we've agreed to simply split the money. Unfortunately, the money is still hidden, and none of us can make heads or tails of his riddle, so... we decided to call in the experts."

Rachel then took out some pieces of paper, and gave one to each of the detectives. Each sheet contains the riddle she recited a moment ago. "Here, for your reference."

I scratched my cheek. Not that it was particularly scratchy - I couldn't grow a beard for some reason - it just felt like the right thing to do as I looked over the paper Rachel had handed me.

"...I would assume, though, that Daniel had at least given you a general idea of where to look, right? Given that you asked us all to come here and didn't just send the riddle in with the initial letter, I take it that the fortune must be somewhere in this mansion?"

That sounded logical, I figured.

"So, judging by that, I guess the best place to start in terms of questioning would be this mansion and its history. Like, for example... was it built by Daniel? Are there any interesting things in terms of its architecture or past tenants, if any? Any incidents? And why is it called 'The Den of Deception'?"

"Ah, I see."

Mizuki took the riddle, gave it a quick glance over again, and stored it in her purse.

"Hmm, this first line speaks of a bang of sorts... Do you have any sorts of guns or cannons or something else that makes loud noises? And, well, for that matter, do you have a floorplan to the building? Would make things easier to navigate around, if need be..."

"Hmm, let me see," Rachel says, tilting her head to the side in thought as she begins to answer the questions in turn.

"Well, we really don't really know for sure, but if it's not here, I have no idea where it could be. I don't think he intended for us to go on a globe-trotting adventure or anything...

"Danny built this mansion about... 20 years ago, I think. He designed it, but... I don't know much more about it. He built it and moved around the time he retired and eased up on his public performances, so I think he just called it that to keep his career with him. It's just a name."

Rachel tilts her head in the other direction.

"He does have plenty of weapons here as part of his collection, but I don't think he actually has any cannons or guns..."

Suddenly, the door opens and an Asian woman peeks her head in. "Miss Rachel," she says, "Your, ah, nephew has arrived."

"He came?" Rachel breathed with a touch of surprise. She glances back at the detectives, murmurs "Excuse me," and hurries out of the parlor, closing the door behind her.
Spoiler : OOC :
This is a pretty big mansion, and it'll probably take an hour or so to get your bearings (= no maps until I get my regular comp back, until then you'll have to rely on room descriptions~)

Seeing as no one (except her fellow investigators) was inside the room, Mizuki decided to examine the wooden cabinet.
