Forum mafia, an internet variant of playing it in real life: also known as werewolf. Each townie tries to eliminate the mafia through voting every day phase. However, townies do not know who is in the town or in the mafia (each townie knows their own alignment). Mafiosi know the entirety of who is in their faction, but are fewer in number. The mafia may vote during day phases and have a secret vote during night phases to kill a townie.
That's it at its most basic: townies win when all mafiosi are gone, mafiosi usually have a win condition of having their "living" players equal in number to the number of townies still "alive".
